Harvest The Rain Book CoverIn bioregions ranging from coastal climates to high-country forests, green solutions abound. Within built environments spanning from cities and suburbia to farms and ranches, productive strategies are at your fingertips.

These days, enlightened property owners ask for more than what conventional landscape architecture provides. Our clients expect not only an increase in the value of their real estate, but they also want ecological landscapes that simultaneously improve the quality of their lives. Central to PermaDesign’s success is that we attract clients who care deeply about their land and who fully understand the many benefits of a PermaDesign Servicesthoughtful landscape design or consultation. One of the obvious signs of their heightened awareness is that each of our clients submits a comprehensive questionnaire based on a simple online form. This process ensures that our clients consider important landscape-oriented questions, and it often makes the client think about his or her real-estate investment in ways that he or she has never done before.

In addition to answering a variety of important questions, clients are given ample opportunities to submit photos, videos, sketches, scaled drawings, and any professionally drafted plans for our review. Working in collaboration with our clients in this well-informed manner, PermaDesign can successfully focus our consultations and designs in efficient and productive ways that aim directly at our clients’ highest priorities.

Melissa, adjusting the landscape architectureAlthough we enjoy working closely in one-on-one relationships with our clients, we are equally happy to collaborate with other designers, architects, landscape architects, builders, specialty contractors, consultants, manufacturers, and distributors. As the landscape-design process evolves and installation begins, this ability to work with a wide range of industry professionals turns out to be a vital component of the services we provide. We can work as occasional consultants, regular contributors to the decision-making process in the field, or as hands-on project managers. Nate Downey, wired for landscape tech.In certain situations, PermaDesign can serve as our clients’ turnkey landscape-installation contractor.

Our combined 40-plus years of experience in both state-of-the-art ecological landscaping and mainstream construction practices also put us in a position to be helpful during the process of choosing a landscape contractor for a project. Every company tends to have its specialty, but it is not always easy to determine who is knowledgeable and experienced at what. Fortunately, we know some of the right questions to ask potential contractors, so our referral service is available for this purpose.

For people who are not yet ready to schedule an appointment for an initial consultation, we offer several free videos about some of the work that we do, and we also have a free online roofwater calculator. Just type your address, click on the perimeter of your building(s), and immediately determine how much precipitation you can collect off of your roof in an average year. It’s fun! Give it a try.

Harvest the Rain, written by Nate Downey (Sunstone Press, 2010), is also available for purchase here, but you should know that for a limited time you can get a free copy of this award-winning book when you schedule an hour or longer landscape consultation with PermaDesign. To help you decide, here’s a little blurb from the book:

Our planet’s water shortage is a reality for one in five people worldwide, but enough precipitation falls annually to provide ample water for everybody. We simply have to collect, store, distribute, and reuse a small percentage of that which falls from the sky. Fortunately, this way of saving the world comes with perks such as increasing your property’s value, lowering your utility bills, or simply creating a comfortable oasis for scintillating conversation just outside the kitchen door. Harvest the Rain presents a wealth of opportunities for enriching your life as you improve your landscape, property and quality of life.
